5 Common TV Problems and How They Are Fixed – technician repairing an LED TV

Introduction

These are the 5 common tv problems our technicians repair most often in LED and Smart TVs, along with the usual cause and fix for each one.

1–3: Picture and power faults

1. Sound but no picture: usually failed backlight LED strips. Replacing the strips brings the picture back without changing the panel.

2. No power or only a standby light: often a power supply board fault caused by voltage fluctuation. The board is repaired or replaced.

3. Lines or coloured bars on screen: caused by a T-con board or panel connection fault. Loose ribbons can be reseated; some panel faults need a panel change.

4–5: Sound and smart features

4. No sound or crackling sound: a speaker, audio amplifier or settings issue, found with a quick test.

5. Apps freezing, Wi-Fi not connecting or stuck on the logo: usually software. A correct firmware update or reset fixes most cases; some need a mainboard or storage repair.

Frequently asked questions

Which of these problems is most common?

Backlight failure, where you hear sound but see no picture, is the fault we repair most often.

Can I fix any of these myself?

You can try restarting the TV, checking cables and updating software. For anything inside the TV, call a technician, as the power board carries high voltage.
